DRF Luftrettung orders two Airbus H145 helicopters and a connected services package

At the European Rotors show, German helicopter emergency service DRF Luftrettung ordered two more H145 helicopters and signed a contract covering the entire fleet with a bespoke HDataPower package from Airbus Helicopters’ Connected Services suite for data services.

The two H145s join the current fleet of 15 H145s and three H135s ordered back in 2020. All 20 helicopters will be delivered to the customer by the end of 2024; 11 of them have already been delivered to the customer. They have already started replacing older BK117 and EC145 helicopters.

The bespoke HDataPower package is a suite of digital services designed to improve flight availability and operational safety while optimizing costs and preserving asset value. “Using the data generated by helicopter systems, Connected Services provide in-depth analysis of flight, maintenance and logistics operations and prepare the groundwork for improvement actions and time savings. Flight Analyzer, which supports operational security, and wACS, our wireless communication system in the air, are prime examplessays Christoph Zammert, Executive Vice President of Customer Support & Services at Airbus Helicopters. “We are honored to help strengthen the operations of DRF Luftrettung so that it can carry out its important daily tasks.”

Our mission is to continuously improve medical care for people in need. To achieve this, DRF Luftrettung operates the most modern helicopters available and is today the largest H145 operator in Europe. With the new Airbus contract, we are further expanding our ongoing fleet modernization and are thus setting the course for the future“, says Achim Vogel, Head of Central Purchasing and Logistics at DRF Luftrettung.

DRF Luftrettung is one of the largest and most experienced air rescue organizations in Europe. The organization and its subsidiaries operate more than 50 Airbus helicopters at 37 bases in Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein and Switzerland for emergency rescue and intensive care transport, including special mission profiles such as hoist operations and day and night operations

The new version of Airbus’ best-selling H145 light twin-engine helicopter was unveiled at Heli-Expo 2019 in Atlanta. This latest upgrade adds a new, innovative five-blade rotor to the Multi-Mission H145, increasing the helicopter’s payload by 150kg. The simplicity of the new bearingless main rotor design also facilitates maintenance operations, further improving the H145’s serviceability and reliability while improving ride comfort for passengers and crew.

In total, more than 1,500 helicopters from the H145 family are in service, which have totaled more than six million flight hours. The H145 is powered by two Safran Arriel 2E engines and is equipped with full digital engine control (FADEC) and Helionix digital avionics suite. It includes a powerful 4-axis autopilot that increases safety and reduces pilot workload. Its particularly low acoustic footprint makes the H145 the quietest helicopter in its class.
