Significant improvement in most October passenger numbers YoY, slight month-on-month decline; Charge performance still strong
In October Finnair carried 866,900 passengers, which is 100.1% more than in October 2021. The number of passengers in October 2022 was 2.6% less than in September 2022 (month-to-month figures are not fully comparable as there was one day less in September).
The impact of COVID-19, including severe travel restrictions imposed by some countries, continued to impact passenger traffic figures and this was particularly evident in Asian figures. Russian airspace was closed at the end of February due to counter-sanctions related to the war in Ukraine, leading to route and frequency cancellations in Asia traffic. However, thanks to robust cargo demand, Finnair continued to operate to most of its Asian destinations despite the longer routes. However, the negative impact of the airspace closure on passenger numbers in Asia, already impacted by the pandemic, was visible in October. The distance-based reported traffic numbers do not account for longer routes due to the airspace closure as they are based on the great circle distance.
Total capacity, measured in Available Seat Kilometers (ASK), increased 71.2% year-on-year and 3.6% mom in October. Finnair operated an average of 264 daily flights (cargo only), which was 52.6% more than in October 2021, but 1.5% less than in September 2022. The differences in capacity figures compared to October 2021 are explained by the longer one average phase length of the flights operated and by the larger track width of the aircraft operated. Finnair’s traffic, measured in passenger kilometers (RPKs), increased 166.9% yoy but fell 0.6% mom. The passenger load factor (PLF) increased by 26.1 percentage points year-on-year but decreased by 3.0 percentage points month-on-month to 72.6%.
ASK growth in Asian traffic was 53.9% yoy. Capacity in the North Atlantic increased by 60.8%. In European traffic, ASKs increased by 89.7%. Domestic ASKs increased by 49.6%.
RPKs increased by 549.7% on Asia trades, 521.1% on North Atlantic trades, 86.1% on European trades and 49.1% on domestic trades compared to the previous year.
In October, the PLF improved compared to the previous year, particularly in Asia traffic (73.5%) and North Atlantic traffic (58.5%). The PLF was 78.0% in European traffic and 71.8% in domestic traffic.
In Asia traffic, passenger numbers increased by 561.2% year-on-year. In North Atlantic traffic, the number of passengers increased by 502.2%. Passenger numbers in European traffic increased by 83.0% and in domestic traffic by 66.8%.
As a result of the closure of Russian airspace, many freight numbers in October fell compared to the previous year. However, most freight numbers improved month-on-month. Available tonne-kilometres increased 37.3% year-on-year (up 12.0% mom) and revenue tonne-kilometres increased 4.8% (up 6.0% mom). Freight-related available tonne-kilometres decreased 15.3% YoY (up 11.6% MoM) and revenue tonne-kilometres decreased 38.8% (up 5.4% MoM). These figures also include pure cargo flights and few such flights were operated in October. Strong demand for freight capacity continued in October, although total freight tonnes declined 26.2% yoy (up 7.2% mom).
In October, 86.9% of all Finnair flights arrived on schedule (85.5%).
The traffic statistics for November 2022 will be published on Wednesday 7 December 2022.
