Passenger traffic at Hong Kong International Airport continues to pick up in October

Hong Kong Airport Authority (AAHK) today released Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) air traffic figures for October 2022. During the month, passenger throughput at HKIA reached 755,000, up 447.9% from the same period last year. Passenger traffic returned to around 13% of pre-pandemic levels in October 2022. Cargo throughput and aircraft movements decreased by 23.9% and 10.2% year-on-year to 351,000 and 12,575 tons, respectively.

The growth in passenger volume was mainly driven by the increase in traffic from Hong Kong residents and visitors due to the easing of local quarantine measures. Passenger traffic to and from Southeast Asia saw the strongest increase.

Cargo volumes continued to be impacted by global economic uncertainties, ongoing geopolitical tensions and global supply chain disruptions. Exports and imports fell by 26.0% and 29.0%, respectively, compared to the same month last year. Freight traffic to and from North America saw the sharpest decline.

In the first 10 months of the year, HKIA carried 3 million passengers, an increase of 179.0% compared to the same period in 2021. Cargo volume and flight movements increased by 14.1% and 5.3%, respectively, to 3.5 million tons or 109,270.

On a rolling 12-month basis, the airport handled 3.3 million passengers, a 162.6% year-on-year growth, 4.5 million tons of cargo and 138,650 aircraft movements, a 10.0% decrease or 1.4%.

Meanwhile, HKIA was named “Cargo Airport of the Year – Asia Pacific” at the 9th Payload Asia Awards organized by Payload Asia. The awards are determined by online voting and a jury of experts and honor outstanding organizations in the air freight and logistics industry.

Cissy Chan, Executive Director, Commercial at AAHK said: “We are honored to receive this award which demonstrates the professionalism and commitment of the HKIA Cargo community to excellent service. We will spare no effort to work with the air cargo community to provide the best service to maintain HKIA’s position as the airport of choice for cargo delivery.”
