- Christening ceremony of the grandson of the first German Chancellor
- 10+01 aircraft registered for the first time with a fully equipped new government cabin
Lufthansa Technik AG today ceremoniously handed over the second government aircraft, the Airbus A350-900, to the German armed forces. The aircraft with the tactical identification 10+01 will shortly be included in the fleet of the special air mission squadron of the Federal Ministry of Defense (BMVg) for political and parliamentary long-haul flight operations. For the first time, it is equipped with a fully-fledged government cabin. Siemtje Möller, Parliamentary State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Defence, ceremoniously christened the aircraft after the former Chancellor “Konrad Adenauer” in the presence of his grandson of the same name.
The Airbus A350, christened today, arrived brand new at Lufthansa Technik at the end of March 2021 and has since undergone an extensive modification program at the company’s Competence Center for Special Aircraft Services in Hamburg. The main focus was on the equipment of the full government cabin, which differs significantly from the transitional cabin of the 10+03 “Kurt Schumacher”, which was delivered in 2020 and is the world’s first VIP and government aircraft based on an Airbus A350.
In contrast to its open cabin design, the various functional areas for political and parliamentary flight operations are now structurally separate from one another, as was the case with the two predecessors based on the Airbus A340. The remaining space in the cabin is available for the accompanying delegations. It features generously spaced seating, a reasonable number of washrooms and modern kitchen facilities.
The subtly revised livery of the 10+01, which also differs in detail from its sister aircraft 10+03, is clearly visible to the public. This includes new lettering in the “Bundes Sans” font and wingtips, the outside of which is now completely painted in the German national colors of black, red and gold.
“Ceremonial handovers of new aircraft to the German Armed Forces have already become a nice tradition in our company in recent years. Nevertheless, today is something special again,” explained Soeren Stark, CEO of Lufthansa Technik. “The aircraft christened today is not the first Airbus A350 we have handed over to the Bundeswehr, but with the identification number 10+01 and the historic name Konrad Adenauer it bears all the insignia of a new flagship. This great honor is also reflected in the new government cabin we installed, which sets new standards with the latest technology and high functionality as well as cost efficiency.”
After today’s ceremonial handover, the 10+01 will be transferred to Cologne tomorrow for later commissioning by the German Air Force. The third Airbus A350 with the registration 10+02 and the future name “Theodor Heuss” is also located at the Hamburg location of Lufthansa Technik and is in an advanced stage of the complete cabin conversion. The 10+03, which is already in use, will soon return to Lufthansa Technik for the conversion from the transitional to the fully-fledged government cabin.
