Pilot, Volvo Group promotes public electric charging

The Volvo Group and Pilot Co. will build on Pilot’s plan to add electric charging stations at select truck stops and travel locations scaled for heavy trucks.

Few details accompanied Tuesday’s announcement of a statement of intent to develop public, high-capacity charging infrastructure for medium- and heavy-duty electric vehicles at more than 750 Pilot and Flying J locations across North America.

Pilot said in July it would install 2,000 fast electric chargers at 500 of its U.S. truck stops over the next few years and create a coast-to-coast network in partnership with General Motors. EVgo, which provides the chargers, includes 350-kilowatt chargers that will eventually be suitable for heavy trucks, said Cathy Zoi, CEO of EVgo.

“Working with Volvo, an expert in freight technology, is in line with our goal of supporting a sustainable transportation infrastructure and taking our customers where they want to go, now and in the future,” said Shameek Konar, CEO of Pilot Co., in a press release.

Volvo Trucks North America and Mack Trucks would benefit from making public charging stations available in addition to selling chargers and advisory services to buyers of the Volvo VNR Electric Class 8 regional truck and Mack LR Electric, which are primarily used as refuse trucks place.

“Partnerships like this are important to Mack, our industry and society at large,” said Martin Weissburg, President of Mack Trucks and Chairman of Volvo Group North America.

Volvo Group and Pilot will identify Pilot and Flying J locations based on electric truck sales.

Most of VNR Electric’s early sales are in California, where Volvo Trucks North America is working with its dealers on a charging network. The VNR Electric has a range of up to 275 miles on a single charge using six 1,200-pound battery packs.

“Our VNR Electric customers, as well as other fleets looking to deploy battery electric trucks, can have peace of mind knowing they have access to a reliable and robust public access charging network strategically located along key transport corridors,” said VTNA President Peter Voorhoeve.

Startup electric truck maker Nikola Corp. said last week it will use the ChargePoint EV public charging network to provide on-street charging for the Class 8 battery-electric trucks it sells. Creating depot-based charging is time-consuming and expensive, especially for companies with fewer resources than established traditional truck manufacturers.

The availability of federal money from the Anti-Inflation Act and federal infrastructure funds could help accelerate the expansion of fee collection. Volvo and Pilot said they are counting on the financial help.

Separately, Prologis Inc., a global leader in logistics real estate, unveiled two charging stations for electric trucks on Tuesday. The two sites will allow the Maersk Performance Team, the shipping giant’s warehousing, distribution and transport company, to charge up to 38 of its 126 VNR Electric Trucks simultaneously.
