Transportation and logistics company Ruan has acquired National Truck Brokers, Inc. (NTB), a specialty trucking company based in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the companies announced today. The terms of the deal were not disclosed. The acquisition connects two long-standing family businesses. Founded in 1974 by Dan Koster, NTB has grown to a fleet of more than 235 trucks transporting grocery customers in Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Ohio, Kentucky and Wisconsin. Ruan is a third-generation, Iowa-based, family-owned company employing 5,000 people in more than 300 facilities nationwide. According to Ruan, NTB will operate as a separate, independent member of the Ruan family of companies and will retain its name and brand, governance structure and operational locations. “Growth through acquisitions has been relatively uncommon at Ruan, but we have done so selectively where there was real strategic fit and the opportunity to maintain and strengthen relationships with key customers. We have found these positive elements in NTB,” said Ben McLean, Ruan’s chief executive officer, in a press release. Over the next few months, NTB’s entire truck fleet will be replaced with newer model Freightliner units to upgrade NTB’s driver team members, the press release said.
