Swedavia’s traffic volume for October 2022 at 77% of pre-Covid levels

Travel demand at Swedavia airports remained at an overall high level until October, despite ongoing global uncertainty. In connection with the annual autumn holiday, Stockholm Arlanda Airport recorded several days with passenger numbers approaching the annual highs. Waiting times at the security checkpoints were 10 minutes or less for most passengers at Arlanda. The airlines started their winter programs at the end of the month with new investments in destinations and routes, mainly in Arlanda but also at Swedavia’s regional airports. Among other developments, Luleå Airport has improved regional connectivity with a number of new direct services to Europe, including London.

Despite economic uncertainty and an uncertain global situation, we naturally continue to prioritize travel and face-to-face encounters – both in our personal lives and at work. Longer term, there are concerns that may of course impact travel demand, but we haven’t seen any impact from that yet. On the contrary – we had a few days at Arlanda in connection with the annual autumn holidays, which were the most intensive travel days so far this year. The situation at airport security checkpoints remains stable, with waiting times normalized for the season, with almost nine out of ten passengers having waiting times of less than ten minutes“, says Jonas AbrahamsonPresident and CEO of Swedavia.

Our work with our airlines and other partners to improve connectivity across Sweden continues to deliver results at our airports. It is gratifying and important that our airlines are investing in the Swedish market. All in all we have now restored about 80 percent of the destinations at our airports compared to before the Covid pandemic and 90 percent of the destinations in Arlanda. Many of these destinations are also brand new“, says Jonas Abrahamson.

Among the new destinations that have become operational in recent weeks is Finnair’s new route to Doha from Arlanda, which launched on November 1st. Ryanair has introduced five new routes from Arlanda to Birmingham, Pisa, Malta, Turin and Tuzla, while Braathens Regional Air (BRA) is launching a new service between Bromma and Århus. As for the regional airport, three new direct connections to European destinations will be launched from Luleå Airport in December – Dusseldorf (Eurowings), London (SAS) and Paris (Transavia). Eurowings is also launching a non-stop service from Kiruna Airport to Düsseldorf.
